Asbestos encapsulant

Asbestos encapsulant: how it works

Environmental protection, public health and safety in workplaces are very important and topical issues in our country.

At the forefront of this is the issue of asbestos disposal and remediation.

The Ministerial Decree of 06/09/94, implementing the Framework Law on Asbestos no. 257/92 regulates the remediation method of INCAPSULATION, defining it as “the treatment of choice for cementitious-type low-friable materials.”

Asbestos encapsulation is a remediation technique used primarily for compact matrices of asbestos cement materials that allows the harmful effects of this material to be neutralized, enabling greater safety.

PECasbestos encapsulant, based on vinyl resins in an aqueous solution, traps fibers by forming a protective film, preventing them from being dispersed.

The encapsulation technique is used:

  • during disposal of asbestos-containing artifacts prior to their removal, as an inerting treatment to prevent wind dispersion of the fibers into the environment;
  • as a post-removal treatment in order to block residual fibers remaining on the surfaces being remediated;
  • as an inerting treatment after remediation of materials containing friable-matrix asbestos to be sprayed onto the remediated surfaces and into the ambient air in order to promote the abatement of aerodispersion of asbestos fibers.
